This first edition of OVC (Office for Victims of Crime) News & Program Updates for 2012 contains materials on "Responding to Elder Abuse, Exploitation, and Victimization."
Abstract
The issue begins with a description of OVC's assistance for local programs that focus on elderly victims of identity theft. A section on "Victims' Voices" presents a case study of the financial abuse suffered by the actor Mickey Rooney in his senior years, seriously damaging his financial security and quality of life in his retirement years. This is followed by articles that address the need for research and enlightened practice in addressing elder abuse. One article focuses on domestic violence against the elderly. The Web-site CrimeSolutions.gov is then profiled in its efforts to inform practitioners and policymakers about what works in justice-related programs and practice, including crime victim services. Also described are State and county coalitions that are addressing the needs of older victims of various types of crimes and abuse. In addition, the issue highlights a national clearinghouse for training and resources, as well as OVC's latest tools for informing and educating service providers, advocates, and other professionals involved in the care and protection of the elderly population.
