This online brochure from the HELP Brochure Series of the federal Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) addresses the nature of the assault offense, the features of victimization needs that usually occur from an assault, and the nature of and how to access services for assault victims.
An assault is defined as "an unlawful physical attack or threat of attack." An aggravated assault is "an attack, with or without a weapon, that results in serious physical injury, such as broken bones, lost teeth, or internal injuries." This includes a threat or attempted attack with a deadly weapon, such as a gun or a knife, which results in no physical harm. Assault victims may experience extensive physical, emotional, and financial consequences. Even if no injury occurs, the threat of severe injury or death and its consequences can cause psychological victimization that requires treatment. The brochure provides information on the kinds of help that may be needed and how to access it. Resources for information and assistance are listed.
