An outcome evaluation focused on a drug education and prevention program entitled "Here's Looking at You 2000" as implemented with 463 students in the 7th and 8th grades in Yadkin County (N.C.) during the 1990-91 school year.
Abstract
The program was offered by regular classroom teachers in the rural area. Six schools served as the experimental group, while two randomly selected schools served as a control group. The evaluation used a quasi-experimental design, with a pretest in September 1990 and a posttest in May 1991 using the Student Attitudinal Inventory. The final sample was based on 228 students, including 170 in the experimental group and 58 in the control group. Results indicated that the program failed to produce any notable positive or negative impact. It did not produce any significant changes in attitudes closely related to juvenile drug use, in use of gateway, smokeless, or hard drugs, or in peer drug use. However, the high attrition rate and methodological issues prevent definitive judgments about the effectiveness of the program itself. Tables and 43 references
