This book examines date rape, how American culture builds and reinforces behavior that can lead to rape, and myths perpetuated by the media and society concerning how women and men relate to each other.
Abstract
The book contains 16 women's accounts of their experiences as victims and their struggles as survivors of date rape, one young man's account of committing a date rape, and chapters by experts on the subject. Topics addressed include: (1) reconciling religion and rape; (2) rebuilding self-image in the aftermath of rape; (3) when yes is not consent; (4) rape sanctioned by the bonds of brotherhood; (5) when rapists brag; (6) revising rape law; (7) surviving a frat train; (8) deflecting suicide and suing for rape; (9) understanding the difference between acquaintance and date rape; (10) a feminist analysis of date rape; (11) reflecting on a 23-year-old rape; (12) Is it rape if he's my boyfriend?; (13) what to expect in a rape exam; (14) a victim, her mother and her friend talk about a date rape; and (15) how to help a victim of rape.
