This report presents the summary and conclusions of Phase I of the Interdisciplinary Project on Domestic Violence in Canada. It defines interdisciplinary cooperation, describes present practices in Canada, and presents recommendations for changes in professional provision of interdisciplinary services.
Abstract
The multifaceted nature of domestic violence issues requires an interdisciplinary strategy which should be provided by the Federal and provincial government, national and provincial professional associations, institution and advocacy groups, and professionals working at a local level. Recommendations cover systemic and structural change, change among professionals, promotion of educational information sharing, and support for existing interdisciplinary initiatives. Approaches are recommended to promote interdisciplinarity; provide leadership; ensure broad participation and collaboration; promote intersectoral and intercultural cooperation; and facilitate community-based models. Because of the complexity of interdisciplinary development in the domestic violence field, careful planning and realistic expectations are required. Many professionals are eager to develop cooperatively; some are resistant. Nevertheless, interdisciplinary approaches can provide a strategy for alleviating some problems by providing a framework in which these concerns can be joined together to effect change. 21 references
