This report outlines the functioning of the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI), and provides information about the projects and activities undertaken during 2002.
Abstract
The main objective of HEUNI is to promote international cooperation on crime prevention and control among European countries. Some of the main functions of HEUNI include the organization of seminars and expert meetings, the provision of technical assistance, research, and the collection and dissemination of relevant information. The organization and financing of HEUNI are also presented. The activities of HEUNI during 2002 focused primarily on organized crime, violence against women, and the Sixth United Nations Survey on Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems. Particular projects included the planning of the International Violence Against Women Survey, which was initiated in 1997. Also during 2002, HEUNI continued to work on a report revealing findings from the Sixth United Nations Survey. The completion of the report is scheduled for the first half of 2003. HEUNI also sought to gain information on human trafficking in Finland, Italy, and Spain and negotiated with Estonia to organize a training course on the prevention and control of domestic violence in Estonia. Also discussed in this report is an account of the collection and dissemination of information conducted by HEUNI. In this regard, HEUNI has established three publication series' and has a library containing a wide array of materials on crime and criminal justice. A brief description of HEUNI’s scholarship program is offered, as is a listing of international meetings that have been organized or co-organized by HEUNI during 2002. Finally, HEUNI’s budget is presented and the Annex contains a list of the titles in HEUNI’s publications series.
