The proposed wellness program for Indianapolis police officers is a voluntary program designed to help officers develop and implement individualized programs to improve physical and psychological health so as to increase their ability to manage stress.
Abstract
The program would involve annual meetings with each officer choosing to participate in the program. Following a thorough analysis of the officer's diet, exercise, work patterns, job performance, and living habits (with due regard to privacy interests), a physical examination would be conducted. The officer would converse with experts in nutrition, fitness, mental health, and physical health to discuss the year's health plan for the officer in each of these areas. Specific health goals and methods for reaching them would be set. A wellness program might include exercise, weight reduction, diet change, and voluntary attendance at seminars related to mental and physical health. Should the officer have difficulty in achieving the established health goals, the appropriate specialists would be available to help the officer deal with these difficulties.
