EQUIPMENT PRESENTLY AVAILABLE IS DESCRIBED, AND FUTURE TECHNICAL TRENDS EXPLORED FOR LOW LIGHT LEVEL SYSTEMS, SECURITY SYSTEMS, EXPLOSIVES DETECTION AND TAGGING, AND VARIOUS EVIDENCE DETECTION AND ANALYSIS APPLICATIONS.
Abstract
THIS SERIES OF PAPERS FROM A SEMINAR ON OPTICS IN SECURITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS THE USE OF LASERS, OPTICAL TECHNIQUES, AND SOLID STATE IMAGE CONVERTERS IN EXPLOSIVES AND BOMB DETECTION. TECHNOLOGY FOR DETECTION OF EXPLOSIVES IS REVIEWED, AND GRAPHITE FURNACE ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY FOR ANALYSIS OF GUNSHOT RESIDUE EVALUATED. THE SECTION ON LOW LIGHT LEVEL DEVICES COVERS THE STATE-OF-THE-ART OF IMAGE INTENSIFIERS AND DESCRIBES A FLASH-PROOF IMAGE INTENSIFIER TUBE FOR NIGHT OBSERVATION DEVICES AND A SET-UP FOR USE OF NIGHT VISION DEVICES IN DRUG INTERDICTION. A SYSTEM WHICH ACCURATELY RECORDS VEHICLE LICENSE PLATES AT NIGHT IS DESCRIBED. A SPECIAL PAPER ON THE USE OF OPTICAL MICROSCOPY IN UNORTHODOX WAYS DISCUSSES USING THIS TECHNIQUE TO PROVE THAT TWO PIECES OF WOOD WERE ONCE JOINED TOGETHER, TO DETECT A FORGERY IN TYPEWRITER DETECTION, AND IN GUNSHOT ANALYSIS. THE PHOTOGRAPHY SECTION COVERS SURVEILLANCE PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDES, THREE-DIMENSIONAL IMAGING IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, A STANDARD FOR CRIME SCENE PHOTOGRAPHY, A SYSTEMATIC AND QUANTITATIVE METHOD FOR SELECTING CAMERA SYSTEMS, DIGITAL ENHANCEMENT OF THE HIBERNIA BANK ROBBERY FILM, AN ANALYSIS OF THE JOHN KENNEDY ASSASSINATION FILM, PASSIVE INFRARED SECURITY SYSTEMS, AND DETECTION OF INHERENT FINGERPRINT LUMINESCENCE BY LASER. THE IMAGING SYSTEMS SECTION PROPOSES STANDARDS FOR MONOCHROME TELEVISION CAMERAS FOR COURTROOM USE; DISCUSSES PRERECORDED VIDEOTAPE TRIALS, WHICH ALLOW EXPERT WITNESSES TO BE RECORDED AT MUTUALLY CONVENIENT TIMES AND HAVE HAD FAVORABLE RESPONSE; AND DESCRIBES LAW ENFORCEMENT APPLICATIONS OF IMAGING SYSTEMS. INFRARED IMAGING TECHNIQUES USED IN A VARIETY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT APPLICATIONS, REAL TIME DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING, THE HISTORY OF THE CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION SYSTEM FOR THE CAPITAL BUILDINGS, AND HAND-HELD INFRARED IMAGING DEVICES, BOTH AIRBORNE AND SURFACE, WERE EXAMINED. AN AUTHOR INDEX AND A SUBJECT INDEX ARE APPENDED.
