After reviewing the history and scope of law enforcement, this book discusses criminal justice career opportunities at the city, county, and State levels as well as within military and Federal services; salaries and employment conditions, educational requirements, and related careers in criminal justice and public safety are also discussed.
Abstract
The history and scope of law enforcement includes a discussion of personnel needs and future outlook. The review of law enforcement opportunities at the city and county levels encompasses personal and selection requirements; probation, tenure, and promotion; the patrol officer; the traffic officer; the detective or criminal investigator; and county units and sheriff's departments. Law enforcement opportunities at the State level include State police and highway patrol, civilian positions, and other regulatory units. A discussion of salaries and employment conditions addresses fringe benefits, other incentives, frustrations, and the element of danger. A review of educational requirements includes a discussion of the cadet program (work-study plan) and recruit training. The chapter on related careers in criminal justice and public safety considers corrections and rehabilitation, criminalistics, polygraph operators, document examiners, fingerprint and firearms experts, the lab technician, private security and loss prevention, and supportive jobs.
