Abstract
Resulting arrests increased by 12 percent, up from 108,700 in 1997-1998 to 121,300 in 1998-1999. During 1998-1999, 11 percent of searches lead to an arrest, slightly higher than in 1997-1998. The 224 road checks carried out in 1998-1999 represented a 61-percent increase over the 139 road checks undertaken in 1997-1998. The number of persons detained for more than 24 hours and subsequently released without charge was 710 during 1998-1999, compared to 674 during 1997-1998. During 1998-1999, 119 intimate searches were carried out, 47 percent less than in 1997-1998. Most were for drugs, and Class A drugs were found during 20 searches. 13 notes, 7 tables, and 3 figures
