In 1989, spurred by the drowning death of a teenage boy who had used LSD, marijuana, and alcohol, the Province of Ontario appointed a Minister of the Government to deal exclusively with the drug problem.
Abstract
Ontario's anti-drug strategy emphasizes prevention, treatment, and enforcement in a campaign designed to reduce demand for drugs and to increase adherence to healthy lifestyles. The program focuses on the "illegal use of drugs," attempting to reduce adolescent use of tobacco, alcohol, and prescription drug abuse as well as illicit drug abuse. Ontario also funds initiatives aimed at reducing the supply of illegal drugs. Special projects provide funding and assistance to selected communities to assess local needs and respond to them. Partnerships between government, communities, business, and education are essential to the national strategy. 2 references (Author abstract modified)
