Access to online services provides police agencies with the tools they need to serve their communities more effectively, but many police agencies have yet to receive the benefits of this computer technology because they do not understand how online access can benefit them.
Abstract
Bulletin board systems, Internet features, and commercial services can all assist law enforcement agencies. An agency needs a computer, a modem with appropriate communications software, and a telephone line to establish an online presence. Bulletin board systems can be used for discussions and to maintain files for users to download. A listserv is a type of mailing list that requires only an e-mail connection and can be used for networking with criminal justice professionals around the world. The Internet as an expanding source of information from around the world. USENET newsgroups are discussion groups that represent an excellent way to keep informed of developments from a distance. Other Internet features are Telnet, FTP sites, gopher servers, and search engines. Commercial service providers offer forums and libraries. Law enforcement officers can use these resources to gather intelligence, conduct research, exchange information, and reach out to their constituents. Photograph and notes
