The activities of the Hawaii Office of the Ombudsman in fiscal year 1992-1993 are reviewed.
Abstract
For 24 years, the nonpartisan Office of the Ombudsman has investigated citizens' complaints about injustice or maladministration by executive agencies of the State and county governments. During fiscal year 1992-1993, the office received 6,283 inquiries--779 fewer than in the preceding fiscal year, mostly accounted for by a reduction in inmate complaints. Of the total, 4,075 were complaints, 1,742 were informational requests, and 466 were cases outside the office's jurisdiction. Hawaii's worst storm of the century, Hurricane Iniki, struck during the year; most calls to the office had to do with insurance problems. The office's role in government reform and other issues of concern are reviewed as well. Statistical tables show inquiries categorized by type, means by which received, month received, county from which received, and disposition. Selected cases are summarized. 11 tables and 1 appendix
