Abstract
The base offense, as referred to in this report, is the most serious offense at time of admission. According to these data, 40 percent of the New Jersey parole population had committed violent crimes, including robbery, homicide, assault, sex offenses, and other personal crimes. The single most common offense type was drug law violation. About 57 percent of the parole caseload was black, 25 percent white, and 18 percent Hispanic. Ninety-five percent of the total parolee population were 21 years or older; only 24 percent were 40 or older. The four New Jersey counties of Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and Hudson accounted for 42 percent of all offenders on parole; fewer parolees were committed from Hunterdon than any other county.
