This report provides information on the average daily population (ADP) in each correctional complex, major institution, and satellite housing unit under the jurisdiction of New Jersey's Department of Corrections during fiscal year 1988.
Abstract
The ADP for each major institution includes the number of inmates housed at the main institution plus inmates assigned to each of the respective satellite units. During fiscal year 1988, the ADP totaled 17,377 offenders, 9,634 of whom were housed in State prison facilities, 3,552 in youth correctional facilities, 708 in juvenile facilities, 291 in halfway houses, 662 in community and residential programs, and 2,530 in county facilities. From 1987 to 1988, the ADP increased by 9 percent. New Jersey main State prisons and satellites had an average population of 2,293 residents in 1988, while youth correctional facilities had an average population of 3,552 residents. The continued increase in the adult institutional population resulted from the ongoing impact of Title 2C and legislative enhancements to the Criminal Code. There was also a continued increase in the number of juvenile offenders in community, residential, and day programs, the ADP for these facilities being 8 percent greater in 1988 than in 1987. 7 tables.
