GENERAL REVIEW AND CRITIQUE OF TYPOLOGICAL EFFORTS IN CRIMINOLOGY WHICH HIGHLIGHTS DISTINCTIONS AMONG DIFFERENT KINDS OF TYPOLOGIES AND LISTS SOME OF THE CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING DEFENDER CLASSIFICATIONS.
Abstract
THE MAJOR PORTION OF THIS ARTICLE CENTERS ON THE EXAMINATION OF A NUMBER OF CLASSIFICATORY SCHEMES IN TERMS OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA - CLARITY, OBJECTIVITY, MUTUAL EXCLUSIVITY, COMPREHENSIVENESS, AND PARSIMONIOUSNESS. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT TYPOLOGICAL EFFORTS HAVE NOT ENTIRELY LIVED UP TO THEIR EARLY EXPECTATIONS AND ATTEMPTS TO INDICATE SOME THE OBSTACLES THAT CONFRONT CLASSIFICATORY VENTURES IN CRIMINOLOGY AND CORRECTIONS. HE MAINTAINS THAT THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATIONS SUCH AS THE BASE OF EXPECTANCY SYSTEM OF ANALYSIS OR PREDICTIVE ATTRIBUTE ANALYSIS WOULD BE MORE PROFITABLE IN THE SEARCH FOR TYPOLOGIES THAN WOULD BEHAVIORAL AND CAUSAL THEORIES.
