Statistics on notifiable offenses for England and Wales are for the period April 1990 through March 1991.
Abstract
Statistics cover total crime and individual offenses which encompass violence against the person, sexual offenses, robbery, burglary, theft and handling stolen goods, fraud and forgery, and criminal damage. A total of 4.7 million notifiable offenses were recorded in the 12 months to the end of March 1991, an increase of 18 percent over the previous 12 months. These figures were anticipated, since nine of the months covered were also included in the annual figures for 1990 published in March. Ninety-four percent were crimes against property; 5 percent were crimes against the person; and 1 percent were other types of crime. There were over a quarter of a million more crimes in the 12 months to March 1991, more than a third of the overall increase of 705,000 offenses. There was a relatively small increase in violent crime (4 percent) compared to approximately 10 percent in the previous 3 years. Recorded crime increased in all police force areas. 5 figures and 3 tables
