Abstract
Ninety-four percent of the offenses were property crimes, 5 percent were violent crimes. Thefts decreased by almost 100,000 to 2.8 million, a decline of 3 percent. Burglaries increased by 1 percent to 1.4 million. Since 1983, burglaries have increased by an average of 5 percent per year. A total of 1.5 million vehicle crimes were reported. Violent crimes increased by 4 percent, including a 2 percent increase in violence against the person. This was the smallest increase in 10 years. Almost two-thirds of the violent crimes were cleared.
