AN ATTEMPT TO SHARPEN THE DESCRIPTION AND REFINE THE BASIC DEFINITION OF HIGHER MATURITY, NON-NEUROTIC DELINQUENT ADOLESCENTS AND TO EXPAND THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE FACTORS WHICH PREDISPOSE THEM TO DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THIS WORK WAS BASED UPON THE STUDY OF 74 SUCH DELINQUENTS, IDENTIFIED BY THEIR I-LEVEL CLASSIFICATION, WITHIN THE CALIFORNIA TREATMENT PROGRAM, PREVIOUSLY SUBCATAGORIZED AS SITUATIONAL EMOTIONAL REACTORS (SE') OR CULTURAL IDENTIFIERS (CI'S). THE STUDY INCLUDED A REVIEW OF CASE HISTORIES, DIAGNOSTIC WORKSHOP RESULTS, AND DESCRIPTIONS OF PAROLE ADJUSTMENT OR RESPONSE TO TREATMENT-INTERVENTION. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE SE AND CI SUBTYPES COULD BE BETTER CATEGORIZED IN TERMS OF THREE NOW SUBTYPES. THESE SUBTYPES ARE CHARACTERIZED BY STRESS REACTIONS (FITTING CLOSELY THE ORIGINAL SE CONCEPTUALIZATION), ADJUSTMENT REACTIONS (FOUND IN BOTH THE SE AND CI CATEGORIES), AND DELINQUENT IDENTIFIERS (QUITE SIMILAR TO THE ORIGINAL CI CONCEPTUALIZATION). CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS, SUBJECT CHARACTERISTICS, AND OTHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION ARE INCLUDED IN APPENDIXES.
