This video, accompanied by a study guide for users, is one of five videos designed to increase awareness of cultural diversity among those who work with African-Americans, Asian/Pacific-Americans, Chicano/Latino-Americans, and Native- Americans; this videotape profiles the common and diverse cultural factors that have influenced African-Americans and emphasizes the importance of government agencies' taking these factors into account in the delivery of services to African- Americans.
Abstract
The format for the video consists of comments and insights of African-Americans regarding the distinctive yet diverse cultural influences that have molded their attitudes, values, behaviors, and other cultural expressions. Visual portrayals focus on various cultural activities practiced by African Americans. Some of the issues discussed are stereotypical images of African-Americans held by the dominant white culture and which impact the self-esteem of African-Americans; the importance of African-Americans' emphasis on their distinctive history and cultural roots, both in Africa and in the United States; and the necessity for government institutions to be aware of the cultural differences of African-Americans when they formulate policy and deliver services that impact African-Americans. The study guide provides material and guidelines for a training program centered in the video material. For other videos in the series, see NCJ- 158615 and 158617-19.
