Besides general instructions and techniques for disarming armed assailants, this text describes and illustrates specific approaches for managing a variety of armed attacks.
Abstract
Initial chapters discuss police training strategies in disarming and hand-to-hand combat. Mental conditioning, applied psychology, and Ch'an (Zen) techniques are examined as contributors to effective disarmament. The Combato system's mental and psychological conditioning, physical conditioning, and close combat techniques are described. Subsequent chapters consider knife, bludgeon, handgun, and shoulder-weapon attackers and use pictures to illustrate and discuss appropriate disarming strategies. Basic strategic principles include: blocking, averting, or gaining control of the weapon; neutralizing the assailant; conquering the fear of death; gaining lucidity of perception through relaxation and a Ch'an state of mind; and using a ruthless fighting attitude and style that is without emotional involvement. Other applications of the Combato system are outlined, and guidelines for instructors are provided.
