Conditions in Nigerian prisons are characterized by great overcrowding, lack of funds, and insufficient staffing. Most prisons are old and in poor condition, with conditions of confinement subhuman and devoid of rehabilitation goals.
Abstract
In 1983, steps were initiated to alleviate prison overcrowding through release and prison construction. However, other changes are needed, including increased financial resources, improved administration, and upgraded staffing. Additional reforms include the identification and encouragement of alternatives to incarceration, reduction of pretrial detention, and increased community participation in alternatives to imprisonment and offender rehabilitation. 19 references.
