Abstract
The National Fire Protection Association recognizes the continuing need to provide guidance on the hazards of chemicals to emergency personnel, safety professionals, inspection and enforcement officials, and architects, designers, and engineers. The association developed the publication to respond to needs that may not be fully met by other publications, including material safety data sheets. The document provides definitions of words associated with hazardous chemicals, such as allergen, etiologic, and neoplasm. Only chemicals that are considered to be commercially significant have been included. A chemical must be available in containers of five-gallon capacity or larger, in compressed gas cylinders, or in pallet-load quantities. Once this criterion is met, the chemical must pose a distinct hazard by having a health hazard rating, which indicates its relative level of ability to cause injury, or a reactivity rating, which indicates its relative level of stability. Chemicals whose only hazard is mild oxidizing ability or flammability, and commercial explosives will not be addressed. Each chemical listing indicates the chemical's numerical ratings for the hazards of health, flammability, and reactivity. Other informational categories include: identity, statement of hazards, emergency response personal protective equipment, spill and leak procedures, fire fighting procedures, health hazards, fire and explosion hazards, instability and reactivity hazards, storage recommendations, usual shipping containers, physical properties, and electrical equipment group classification. Appendices, cross reference of chemical names and synonyms
