This paper profiles the new training methods and teaching programs developed for the Dutch police following a comprehensive training needs assessment.
Abstract
Following an overview of the development of new training methods in the police schools of The Netherlands, one of the methods, the training program conflict management, is described in detail. A four-part training program in conflict management focuses on how to approach emotional persons, how to interview emotionally inhibited persons and deal with two quarreling parties, how to decide on a technique for resolving conflict based on situational factors, and cooperation between two officers in managing a conflict. Training techniques include discussion, instructional tapes, and role playing. A profile of the newest training program for Dutch police features the use of modules. There are two types of schools, one for constables and sergeants and another for police officers. The use of modular teaching means that within a specified period one theme is taught from the perspective of several disciplines. The paper briefly describes the modules for each of the two schools. Overall, the new training program and techniques are designed to prepare police to manage situations, interactions, and conflicts likely to arise in contemporary Dutch society. 14-item bibliography
