THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY ENLISTED THE HELP OF A NATIONAL PANEL OF EXPERTS TO DEVELOP STANDARDS FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING.
Abstract
THE PANEL EXAMINED ALL PREVIOUS STUDIES AND REPORTS DEALING WITH STANDARDS, DEVELOPED A SET OF REVISED STANDARDS, AND CONDUCTED A FIELD REVIEW OF THE DRAFT STANDARDS IN 26 INSTITUTIONS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. THE RESULT OF THIS PROCESS WAS A LIST OF 34 STANDARDS FOR OPERATING VOCATIONAL EDUCATON PROGRAMS IN THE CORRECTIONAL ENVIRONMENT. THE STANDARDS ARE GROUPED AS FOLLOWS: CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONS; STUDENTS; STAFF; ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION; AND PHYSICAL PLANT, EQUIPMENT, AND SUPPLIES. EACH INDIVIDUAL STANDARD IS ACCOMPANIED BY A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF WHAT IS TO BE ACHIEVED. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION SHOULD IMPROVE WITH THE ADOPTION OF THE STANDARDS BY CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS AND EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISORS, AND GENERAL EDUCATION AND OVERALL INSTITUTIONAL OPERATION SHOULD BENEFIT AS WELL.
