This report presents police data about crimes reported or detected in New South Wales (NSW) between January 2001 and December 2003.
Abstract
All data contained in the report were drawn from the Computerized Operational Policing System (COPS) of the NSW Police Service in January 2004. The first section presents definitions and explanatory notes concerning how data were recorded and counted. The second section offers an overview of the major trends in the serious offense categories during the period January 2002 through December 2003. Summary points indicating statistically significant trends accompany figures illustrating these trends for selected offense categories. Trends are also analyzed for methods of proceeding against offenders. For each offense category, either no statistically significant trend either upward or downward was detected, or a downward trend was detected. In no serious offense category was there a noted upward trend. The third section presents monthly trends in recorded criminal incidents; three tables present monthly data for 2001, 2002, and 2003 by type of offense. The fourth section offers data on the monthly trends in method of proceeding against alleged offenders; three tables present monthly data by type of process pursued during 2001, 2002, and 2003. Types of processes include proceeded against to court, proceeded against other than to court, all proceedings, and not proceeded against. The fifth section presents data on the numbers and percentages of cleared crimes, by selected types of offenses; three tables offer data from 2001, 2002, and 2003. The sixth section contains 28 tables showing the numbers and rates of recorded crimes in the statistical division where the offense occurred for the periods January through December 2001, 2002, and 2003. Previous publications of this report have contained trend data on driving offenses; these data are not contained in this report due to classification changes. Figures, tables, appendix
