This report provides data on criminal cases heard before all New South Wales (Australia) local courts in 1989 and children's courts in 1988-89.
Abstract
The cases for which data are provided involve criminal cases that are summary or those indictable cases heard by consent in summary jurisdiction. Cases committed for trial or sentence in higher courts and civil matters coming before the local courts as well as appeals in minor traffic cases are not included. Approximately one-third of the total business of the local courts is reflected in these statistics. Data on adult court appearances are derived from three separate case categories that pertain to drugs, drunk driving, and general offenses. General information on all types of cases covers trends in appearances and proven offenses, the occupational status of convicted offenders, trends in case outcomes, amount of fine, age and sex of convicted offenders, bail, and plea. Data specific to drunk driving cases cover trends in police breath tests, blood alcohol concentration, and period of license disqualification. Data specific to drug cases cover trends in proven offenses by drug type. Data specific to the children's courts address trends in police cautions and trends in cases involving welfare matters. 56 tables
