This volume contains the proceedings of the Probation Studies Unit, Second Colloquium.
Abstract
The colloquium met to examine the changing political, social and financial context in which the probation service operates, exploring the theme of "New Politics, New Probation?" and the options, opportunities and constraints that the theme presents for the service's future development. Participants discussed papers on the following topics, among others: (1) policy and practice: opportunities, choices and their implications; (2) core tasks and new techniques; (3) black perspectives; (4) crime, probation and social work: enduring rights and wrongs; (5) successful probation practice; (6) promoting effective supervisory relationships; (7) using the prison as a setting to promote reform; (8) probation and prison common tasks and skills; and (9) structures and accountability.
