A mediation program has developed over the past three years at the New Mexico Youth Diagnostic and Development Center and Girls' School which teaches residents alternatives to violent and self-destructive behavior.
Abstract
The program is adapted from a school mediation program run by the New Mexico Center for Dispute Resolution (NMCDR). It consists of three components: (1) a conflict resolution curriculum that can be taught in academic or residential settings; (2) a mediation program that trains residents and staff to resolve conflicts among themselves; and (3) a reintegration component which involves parents and helps residents prepare for their return home. The learning and practice of mediation skills helps to break the cycle of violence. The program has changed the climate of the facility and has helped adults and youth to dispel stereotypes and to embrace a common vision.
