Abstract
During 1980, there were 7,976 violent crimes (156 murders, 543 rapes, 1,631 robberies, 5,646 aggravated assaults) and 63,983 property crimes (18,513 burglaries, 41,960 larcenies, 3,510 motor vehicle thefts), for a total of 71,959 serious crimes in New Mexico. This figure represents an increase of 3.3 percent over 1979's total. The serious crime rate per 1,000 population was 60, up from 55.9 for 1979. Firearms were used in 52.6 percent of the 156 murders; 141 of the reported murders were cleared by arrest. A total of 768 law enforcement officers were assaulted and 3 were killed during the year. The report provides detailed tables giving data on the number of criminal homicides, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larceny-thefts, and motor vehicle thefts during the year. Also given are the age and sex of persons arrested, total arrests by race and ethnic background, value of stolen property and value of property recovered, crime index trends, and crime by counties.
