This statistical report covers the activities of the municipal courts of the county district courts exercising concurrent jurisdiction in New Jersey for the court year from September 1, 1979, to August 31, 1980.
Abstract
There are 529 municipal courts in New Jersey, including 15 joint municipal courts; they are presided over by 370 judges who reported spending 114,769 hours on the bench hearing all kinds of cases. A total of 4,546,042 complaints were filed, an increase of 5.7 percent. The number of defendants sentenced to jail increased by 527, from 11,927 to 12,454. Persons placed on probation also increased, from 8,282 to 8,673. Judges revoked 29,399 motor vehicle drivers' licenses, an increase of 10.7 percent over the prior year. Total expenditures for the municipal courts were $18,649,645, an increase of 10.9 percent over 1978. The report contains an organizational chart, summaries of expenditures of municipal courts by municipalities, county totals of proceedings in the municipal courts, proceedings in the municipal court by type of traffic case outcome, and tables relating to municipal court defendants status.
