This description of the Nevada County Probation Department's (California) work furlough program details all aspects of the program's administration and operations.
Abstract
The program permits qualified offenders sentenced to county jail for more than 45 days to continue their employment, education, or child care. Candidates must be eligible for housing in the detention center and must spend all off hours in the facility. Participants must pay an administrative fee of $10.00 per day in advance each week. Eligibility rules require that an applicant have full-time employment for no more than 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, be paid at least minimum wage with taxes deducted, be provided workmen's compensation, be properly licensed or certified if required, and have approved transportation and proof of insurance for the vehicle used. Other requirements are adequate supervision on the job; a job site located within a reasonable distance; and employment that does not require the offender to work door-to-door, on call, or in the home. Persons involved in a labor dispute are not eligible. An education furlough requires that an applicant carry at least 12 course units, maintain a "C" average in all classes, take required courses, have approved transportation, and attend school within a reasonable distance. Eligibility for child care requires that the children be within the immediate family in the family residence and that the care be no more than 10 hours per day for 6 days a week. The applicant must have approved transportation and a home environment accessible for monitoring. Appended program forms
