The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) supports the concept of strong central oversight of Federal antidrug efforts.
Abstract
This Congressional testimony summarizes the GAO's past position on the need for a so-called drug czar. It then provides information on the role of the National Drug Enforcement Policy Board in coordinating U.S. drug law enforcement policy and operations. The statement discusses how the responsibilities of the Board might be absorbed into the National Drug Policy Board created by Executive Order in March 1987. The statement also discusses proposed legislation which provides for central oversight of the entire Federal drug abuse control effort. 1 appendix
