The reporting and collection of jail statistics in Nebraska have been largely standardized through efforts relating to jail standards.
Abstract
The Nebraska Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (Crime Commission) maintains the data and has been collecting it since 1981. The Crime Commission houses the Jail Standards Division and the Statistical Analysis Center. Reports are issued both regularly and to meet specific needs. Nebraska Jail Standards went into effect as part of a comprehensive package to improve local jail operations through mandatory standards and inspection. The standards prescribe minimum levels of performance for training, records retention and statistics, admission and release processing, classification, security and control, library, exercise and recreation, rehabilitation, visitation, mail, medical services, food services, discipline, grievances, construction, and renovation. The reported data provides a useful resource for State planning, monitoring, and legislative impact analysis and for local needs assessments and other purposes. The core elements of the data have remained consistent, although changes in technology have produced changes in how the data are collected and processed.
