This paper presents the findings of a study on the theft of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) in Britain.
Abstract
The study attempted to determine the extent of LCV theft nationally in Britain and to gain a greater understanding of how, when and where such thefts occur. Over a 12-month period, 47,181 LCVs were stolen in England, Scotland and Wales. Most of the vehicles were stolen in England, and most were car-derived, panel and pick-up vans. The report recommends specific anti-theft actions for: (1) vehicle manufacturers (improve vehicle security on LCVs, target high-risk vehicles, mark components); (2) security device manufacturers (improve effectiveness of mechanical devices, target high-risk vehicles); (3) LCV owners (install effective security, target specific industries, provide security advice to drivers); (4) LCV drivers (carefully choose parking locations, use vehicle security); (5) insurers (review policy on insuring older vehicles); and (6) police (tackle the low recovery rate, improve recording of LCV thefts).
