REPORTS OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF TWO CONFERENCES HELD IN RESPONSE TO CONCERN OVER THE JAILING OF A DISPROPORTIONATE NUMBER OF CANADA'S NATIVE PEOPLE, AND ATTENDED BY NATIVES, CABINET, AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.
Abstract
THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE PLENARY SESSION HEARD REPORTS OF WORKSHOPS DEALING WITH PRIMARY AREAS OF INTERACTION BETWEEN THE NATIVES AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THESE INCLUDED PROBATION, PAROLE, AFTERCARE, AND CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS; LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES; AND THE COURTS AND CORRECTIONS SYSTEMS. THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE SET UP GUIDELINES TO PROVIDE A GENERAL PHILOSOPHY UNDERLYING ANY APPROACH TO THE PROBLEMS OF NATIVES WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. RESOLUTIONS WERE ADOPTED WHICH OUTLINED OBJECTIVES FOR INTEGRATION OF NATIVE PEOPLES INTO THE STRUCTURE AND OPERATIONS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AS WELL AS FOR THE CREATION OF A CANADIAN ADVISORY COUNCIL ON NATIVE PEOPLES AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. --IN FRENCH AND ENGLISH
