THE REPORT OF A NATIONAL GATHERING OF PERSONS INVOLVED PROFESSIONALLY IN PROVIDING SERVICES TO YOUTHS FEATURES SUMMARIES OF PRESENTATIONS MADE DURING GENERAL SESSIONS, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, AND WORKSHOPS.
Abstract
THE REPORT IS INTENDED AS AN ANTHOLOGY OF RESOURCE MATERIAL ON ISSUES CONCERNING YOUTH WORKERS, RATHER THAN AS A MERE NARRATIVE OF CONFERENCE EVENTS. IT OPENS WITH THE REMARKS OF THE MAIN SPEAKERS--REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ORGANIZATION THAT PLANNED THE GATHERING AND OF LEAA'S OFFICE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION, THREE CONGRESS-PERSONS, A YOUTH ADVOCATE, AND THE DIRECTORS OF VISTA, THE LABOR DEPARTMENT'S OFFICE OF YOUTH PROGRAMS, AND GREAT BRITAIN'S NATIONAL YOUTH BUREAU. SUMMARIES OF PANEL AND WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS, NUMBERING APPROXIMATELY 70, TOUCH ON A VARIETY OF YOUTH PROBLEMS, SERVICE NEEDS AND STRATEGIES, CLIENT GROUPS, AND POLICY DEVELOPMENTS. MANY OF THE PRESENTATIONS DESCRIBE IN SOME DETAIL PROGRAMS AND TREATMENT TECHNIQUES THAT HAVE PROVED SUCCESSFUL. AMONG THE NUMEROUS TOPICS ADDRESSED ARE DEINSTITUTIONALIZATION, STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS AND POLICYMAKING, YOUTH ADVOCACY METHODS, INNOVATIVE EMPLOYMENT AND DIVERSION PROGRAMS, COMMUNITY-BASED ALTERNATIVES TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION, STATEWIDE YOUTH WORK COALITIONS, PROGRAM EVALUATION, AFTERCARE SERVICES, CRISIS INTERVENTION, PEER COUNSELING AND OUTREACH, STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT, AND INFORMATION AND REFERRAL. THE REPORT ALSO PROVIDES LISTS OF REGISTRANTS AND OF FILMS SHOWN DURING THE CONFERENCE. (LKM)
