DISCUSSION OF PROGRAM DESIGNED TO PREVENT RECIDIVISM AND DELINQUENCY AMONG YOUTHS, TO IMPROVE YOUTHS' ATTITUDES, SELF RESPECT, AND FAMILY LIVES, AND TO FIGHT RACISM.
Abstract
DESPITE NORMAL MOTIVATION PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH YOUTH PROJECTS, THE EXPERIMENT DESCRIBED IN THE REPORT HAS BEEN UNUSUALLY SUCCESSFUL IN ATTRACTING AND MAINTAINING THE INTEREST OF DELINQUENCY PRONE YOUTH. THE FOCAL POINT OF THE PROJECT IS THE USE OF MINIBIKES DONATED BY A LARGE CORPORATION. THE MINIBIKE ATTRACTS THE YOUTH TO THE YMCA, THE CO-ORDINATING AGENCY, AND OFFERS HIM THE EXCITEMENT HE IS LOOKING FOR. FROM THIS STARTING POINT, THE PROJECT COUNSELORS DEVELOP TRUST AND CONFIDENCE, AND CAN GUIDE THE YOUTH FROM A WAYWARD PATH.
