LEMMP (Law Enforcement Minority Manpower Project) and minority recruitment is discussed with particular emphasis on the court system.
Abstract
Recruiters' strategies and techniques in dealing with potential applicants for criminal justice jobs influence successful application. Recruiters should use the Williamson counseling approach, involving helping applicants through the entire process of applying for a job, handling the interviews, and dealing with potential obstacles to success in retaining a job. Basic elements of successfully handling a job must be reviewed by recruiters so that the applicants will do well. However, it is vital that recruiters establish a rapport with their clients first. From the court perspective, LEMMP staff need to understand the makeup of the court, the judge selection process, and what judicial competency really means (dedication and commitment to serving the people and community to improve the justice system for all people). An overview of these elements given is as is a discussion of activities of the Judicial Council organized by black judges, a brief history and definition of probation and parole, and an overview of court services in Topeka, Kans. The purpose of LEMMP recruiters and an explanation of the profile of prospective employees for the Shawnee County, Kans., probation department are presented. Job followup by recruiters is mentioned as vital to the new employees' success on the job and to LEMMP.
