This report explains the variables, the coding information, and the data set providing basic information on the national jail population for 1986, as gathered through the National Survey of Jails by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
Abstract
Sampling units were the county or city jurisdictions administering one or more local jails. A stratified random sample included all jurisdictions with average daily jail populations of 100 or more and varying proportions of jurisdictions with smaller jails. An introduction explains the survey methodology, data limitations, the file structure, and the information contained in the codebook. Descriptions of each variable, list of county codes, estimate of sampling area, questionnaires, and tables showing frequency distributions of statistics.
