The Runaway Education Program, which consists of a curriculum guide and video, is designed to make youth aware of the risks and dangers of running away from home to a life on the streets, as well as the services available to them to help them address their problems.
Abstract
The curriculum guide consists of formats, materials, and guidelines for three lessons. The first lesson pertains to who runs away and for what reasons. The lesson outline contains information on the anticipatory set, purpose and objective, input and modeling, summary, and teacher's background information. The second lesson focuses on the realities of life on the street and the problems runaways may encounter. Sections of the lesson guide are anticipatory set, purpose and objective, input and modeling, check for understanding, guided practice, summary, and teacher's background information. The material for this lesson includes a video entitled, "On the Street." The 8-minute video consists of comments by runaways as to what they have experienced in life on the streets as well as actual video of places where they have slept. They explain why they left home and describe the difficulties of surviving on the street, which has led many of them into prostitution, drugs, and theft. An article that describes the perils of life on the streets for runaways is also included, along with a role play script for "Life on the Streets." The third lesson informs youth about the places they can contact for help. The lesson outline includes an anticipatory set, purpose and objective, input and modeling, and a summary. Charts and an evaluation form are also included in the packet.
