TO FOSTER COMMUNICATION AMONG PROGRAMS PROVIDING RUNAWAY SERVICES AND TO SERVE AS A REFERENCE DOCUMENT FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THESE PROGRAMS, THIS DIRECTORY LISTS 212 RUNAWAY PROGRAMS LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
Abstract
RUNAWAY PROGRAMS IN ALL 50 STATES, GUAM, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED, NOTING THE AGE AND STATUS OF YOUTHS SERVED, THE TYPE OF COUNSELING PROVIDED, THE PROGRAMS, REQUIREMENTS, THE ETHNIC COMPOSITION OF CLIENTS, THE NUMBER OF PERMANENT STAFFERS OR VOLUNTEERS, AND OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED. THE NAME, ADDRESS, AND PHONE NUMBER OF EACH PROGRAM ARE LISTED, AS WELL AS THE NAME OF ONE OR TWO PERSONS TO CONTACT. IN ADDITION, A FUNDING SURVEY REPORTS THE PROPORTION OF PROGRAMS RECEIVING FUNDS FROM EITHER PUBLIC OR PRIVATE SOURCES, WHILE A RESIDENTIAL CAPABILITY SURVEY REVEALS THE PROPORTION OF PROGRAMS OFFERING HOUSING IN GROUP CENTERS (67 PERCENT), IN PRIVATE HOMES (16 PERCENT), IN BOTH (13 PERCENT), OR IN NEITHER (4 PERCENT). A MAP ILLUSTRATES THE DISTRIBUTION OF THESE PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE RUNAWAY PROBLEM EXAMINES LITERATURE ON THE SUBJECT, SOCIOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS FOR THIS TREND, AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RESPONSES TO THIS ISSUE, IDENTIFYING RUNAWAYS AND THEIR MOTIVES. ACTIVITIES AND DEMONSTRATION GRANTS OF THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT BUREAU, ESTABLISHED BY HEW TO IMPLEMENT THE RUNAWAY YOUTH ACT, ARE NOTED FOR 1977 AND 1978, AS WELL OTHER FEDERAL AGENCY INVOLVEMENT AND FUNDING SOURCES. A LIST OF SELECTED RESOURCES ALSO IS PROVIDED, INCLUDING NATIONAL RUNAWAY HOTLINES, BOOKS, RELEVANT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND GENERAL INFORMATION SOURCES. (WJR)
