This manual is a guide for therapists to use with the workbook entitled "My Very Own Book About Me," which was written as a tool to be used in the treatment of child victims who come to the Spokane Sexual Assault Center (Washington State).
Abstract
The workbook has been used in therapeutic settings since 1980 and revised three times based on first-hand experience and treatment. Although one of the primary purposes for the workbook is to assist with the treatment of sexually abused children in a clinical setting, it is also a valuable tool for children and parents to use in the home; when there has been minimal abuse and the parents are handling the situation well, using the book for the child to share with parents at home may be sufficient assistance. The workbook has been used with children as young as 4 years old and up to the age of 12 years. This therapist's guide explains the purpose and therapeutic uses of the workbook page by page. There are suggestions designed for individual, group, and family use with each section. Many interviews are described. The therapist is encouraged to use discretion in choosing which interventions will be most useful, based on evaluation of the client. A separate section provides guidance for therapy with intact incest families, along with a checklist of indicators of possible sexual abuse. A 33-item bibliography and a list of 10 prevention/treatment organizations
