SURVEY OF EFFECT OF DIFFERENT WORK WEEK PATTERNS ON SECONDARY JOB HOLDING, EXAMINING THE EXTENT OF AND REASONS FOR OFF-DUTY EMPLOYMENT IN WICHITA.
Abstract
FIREMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO HOLD TWO JOBS THAN POLICEMEN. IT WAS HYPOTHESIZED THAT VARYING POLICE SHIFT SYSTEMS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DIFFERENCES IN MOONLIGHTING RATES. ADDITIONAL FACTORS SUCH AS AGE, NUMBER OF DEPENDENTS, AND OTHER TRADITIONAL VARIABLES AFFECTING CONSUMPTION NEEDS AND INCOME PRESSURES OF THE FAMILY UNIT WERE INVESTIGATED. THE TRADITIONAL VARIABLES STUDIED WERE ONLY MODERATELY INFLUENTIAL ON POLICE MOONLIGHTING AND WERE INSIGNIFICANT DETERMINANTS OF FIREMEN MOONLIGHTING. INFORMATION, ABILITY, AND OPPORTUNITY ARE ALSO PRE-CONDITIONS TO MOONLIGHTING, EACH BEING A NECESSARY BUT NOT SUFFICIENT CONDITION. RESEARCHERS BELIEVE THAT MULTI-JOB HOLDING IS COMPLIMENTARY WITH THE FOUR-DAY WORKWEEK SINCE A LARGE BLOCK OF TIME WILL BE FREED FROM PRIMARY JOB ACTIVITIES UNDER SUCH A SYSTEM.
