This report contains statistics on motoring offenses in England and Wales for 1991 and selected years back to 1981.
Abstract
Tabular data address a summary of action taken for offenses that relate to motor vehicles, motoring offenses dealt with by official police action, written warnings by offense group, Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme notices issued and with which compliance was achieved, fixed penalty notices by results, percentage of fixed penalty notices paid, and proceedings at magistrates' courts for offenses relating to motor vehicles. Also addressed are proceedings at magistrates' courts for offenses relating to motor vehicles; defendant proceeded against at magistrates' courts for summary motoring offenses; offenses dealt with by written warning, notice, fixed penalty notice and prosecution; findings of guilt at all courts; sentences and orders imposed by courts; average fines at magistrates' courts for certain motoring offenses; sentences of immediate custody at all courts; driving license disqualifications and endorsements;, and driving license disqualifications over 1 year. Statistics indicate that the total number of offenses dealt with by official police action in 1991 was 8.4 million, a 4-percent decrease from 1990. The number of fixed penalty notices issued in 1991 for obstruction, waiting, and parking offenses was 4.7 million, 11 percent fewer than in 1990. The number of immediate custodial sentences given for motoring offenses in 1991 was 33,200, an increase of nearly 5,000 over 1990. 17 tables
