This training manual details the mental preparation and operating procedures that police officers should use to meet legal requirements and avoid much of the potential danger involved in high-risk motor vehicle stops in which the driver or passengers are believed to be armed and dangerous.
Abstract
Making a high-risk vehicle stop requires planning and cautious action by the arresting officer, because the stopping maneuver and removal of suspects is a dangerous undertaking. Police officers must prepare for any contingency by developing an attitude that regards all but the obvious high-risk stops as unknown in terms of danger. Factors requiring attention include the selection of an appropriate stop for the stop, the positioning of the vehicles, the officer positions and responsibilities, and the removal of suspects from the vehicle. Stopping oversize and overweight vehicles requires attention to additional factors. Questions and answers and description of another training publication are included
