Maintaining reliable records of book losses in a university library is a difficult and time-consuming activity. It is the responsibility of the librarian to find an efficient method to monitor losses. A history of the various methods used by Purdue University's General Library over the past twenty-five years is presented, from a complete inventory to various sampling methods.
