In an era of increasing demands for prison space and shrinking budgets, many corrections administrators are turning to modular space -- factory-built frame structures that can be joined on-site to form one building or a series of buildings -- as an economical and viable solution.
Abstract
The advantages of modular space include facility construction in a set period of time, unaffected by weather, labor, or delivery conditions; available leasing and purchasing options; specific prices set for specific buildings; lower cost than traditional buildings and the potential to relocate the facility when necessary. Before purchasing or leasing modular space, officials should consider the site location, basic facility requirements, and compatability with the current structure. In accepting a contractor's bid, corrections administrators should review the company's track record and general expertise and visit other locations where the company has provided similar space.
