The authors comment on the current prevalent mode of defensiveness that people have adopted in order to live in a violent society.
Abstract
A basic problem, say the authors, is that traditional religious values have given way to atheistic and egoistic attitudes. People are insecure, untrusting, confused, and afraid; their defensive attitude undermines their communication and drives them into social isolation. The clergy should proclaim the values of morality, ethics, spirituality, and social responsibility--but alone, they will not be able to resolve the problem of rampant violence. Welfare policy needs to be reformed, and greater attention must be given to the problems of illicit drugs and the lack of education. Examples of persons who are in the defensive mode, the aggressive-defensive mode, and the apathy mode are given. 26 references
