Police telecommunications systems have benefited from many technological advances in recent years in radios, 911 systems, computer-aided dispatch, mobile data terminals, cellular telephones, logging equipment, and computers.
Abstract
Enhanced 911 systems automatically display the caller's telephone number and address and transfer the call to the appropriate dispatcher in less than 15 seconds. However, radio dispatch is still the best and most affordable technology for some police agencies. Mobile and portable radios are now smaller and more durable than they were 10 years ago. Police agencies considering a 911 system must find an expert with both computer knowledge and law enforcement experience. When adding computer- aided dispatch, they should make sure that each feature is necessary. Mobile terminals should be readable in all kinds of light, durable, resistant to heat and humidity, easy to repair, and adequate in memory. Cellular phones can reduce response time to zero for some calls and can help clear the air for other transmissions. Regardless of which system is consider, the agency should carefully consider the needs, maintenance costs, continuing support from the vendor, and the need for improved training and pay for dispatchers. Addresses of vendors are included.
